Adilabad: Moderate to light showers failed to dampen the spirit of devotees who ceremoniously immersed Ganesh idols with pomp and gaiety in irrigation tanks, streams and rivers across Nirmal, Adilabad and Mancherial district headquarters on Thursday.
The devotees performed special prayers to the elephant-headed god, who is worshipped as the ‘averter of obstacles’, and bid adieu to the Lord Ganesha on the of finale of 11th day since installation of idols on September 2. As part of the fiesta, at several places, the devotees organised ‘annadanam’ or feeding the poor, to mark the occasion. The razzle-dazzle of the religious rally witnessed the devotees dancing to drum beats and folk songs to their heart’s content with shouting slogans such as “Ganapathi Bappa Moriya”, “Ganesh Maharaj Ki Jai”, etc. Women, attired in their best, performing ‘Kolatam’ and traditional dance forms, was another colourful addition to the splendour of the ‘shobhayatra’.
The devotees, who sported saffron sashes and vermillion tilak to their foreheads, took out massive processions in order to immerse the idols from pandals or mandaps to the tanks, streams and rivers. They soaked in the devotion even as the towns and mandal centres were registering sporadic showers.
In order to ensure smooth conduct of the procession and immersion, the district police took a slew of measures by coordinating with the roads and building, municipality and revenue departments. They deployed life guards at the immersion points which were illuminated with video surveillance by CCTV cameras for keeping a tab on trouble makers. Large cranes were arranged to immerse the idols in the water bodies. Traffic restrictions were imposed in certain towns to facilitate the religious rally.

Adilabad MLA Jogu Ramanna, ZP Chairperson Rathod Janardhan, BJP district president Payal Shankar, Collector Divya and SP Vishnu Warrier took part in the shobhayatra held in Adilabad district centre where idols were immersed in Penganga river. They performed prayers in a temple of Lord Vinayaka to begin the immersion. Collector Divya Rajan also played Kolatam along with the women devotees.
