Hyderabad: Even as the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen party “launched” its campaign for Parliament elections well in advance, rumours are rife that Amer Ali Khan, news editor of Siasat Urdu Daily, could be joining the fray this time.
Amer, son of eminent Urdu journalist and Editor of Siasat Urdu Daily Zahed Ali Khan, was previously associated with the YSR Congress. He had actively played an important role in the recent elections and attended several meetings held by the Congress across the State.
In fact, the Congress had invited Amer and Zahed Ali Khan to several important meetings of the party with Muslim leaders and sought their help to reach out to the community. While none from the family of Zahed Ali Khan contested during the recent Assembly elections, it is rumoured that Amer Ali Khan, could be contesting the coming elections from the Hyderabad seat.
However, no one from the organisation or the family were willing to come on record to deny or confirm this. The veiled attack on the ’eminent Urdu journalist’ and call from the AIMIM to allow it to do ‘the job of a politician’ is being interpreted by many that the party sees him as a probable Congress candidate. In the 2009, Zahed Ali Khan had contested the Lok Sabha election but lost to AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi.
During Wednesday’s public meeting, AIMIM leaders came down heavily on the “Urdu newspaper” and “its management” for dividing the community and playing a negative role. They alleged that despite “the humiliating experience in the previous elections, these people will rise again”. They further said that the family had helped all the anti-Majlis groups, including the Left parties and the Prajakutami in previous elections.
