Hyderabad: The corona pandemic has not only cast its impact on big projects in the city but even the small and petty construction works too have been affected given the dearth of workforce.
With reports of lockdown being imposed yet again, many workers have started to leave for their hometowns and more are planning to follow suit.
Many families which had planned to add another floor to the existing structure or dismantle the dilapidated building and replace it with a new one, are forced to either postpone their projects or shelve them, as the available skeletal construction workforce in the city is hard to tap into.
In many colonies, individual building owners and flat owners, who are taking up repairs or revamp or adding new floors, have their fingers crossed.
“There are not many workers available. We are managing the works with available workforce. What used to be completed in a week is now taking 10 or more days,” says K. Koteswara Rao, a resident of Vengalrao Nagar.
Earlier, such works were awarded to a mestri on contract but since lockdown, many are executing the works on daily basis.
“This is mainly because uncertainty over implementation of lockdown and the number of days it will be enforced. Left with no choice, we are engaging workers on daily basis and making payments accordingly,” explains Mohan Goud, a resident at Karmikhanagar, Yousufguda.
Similar is the case of Panduranga Naik, a resident of Borabanda. “I have ordered for cement and sand loads for constructing an additional floor in my house but there are not many workers available to expedite the works. With rains lashing since last couple of days, things are only getting worse,” he laments.
Speculations on another round of lockdown has resulted the construction workers heading back to their hometowns. “If lockdown is implemented again, workers will struggle to meet their daily needs. Hence, many are preferring to stay at their native places as cost of living will be minimal,” points out Narasimha, a mestri from Mothinagar.
With monsoon hitting the State and buzz gaining about work in agricultural fields, workers are relocating themselves from construction worksites to farm lands.
