Native to the Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia, these miniature donkeys are bred to be small, tough, docile, and trainable. They were used to carry firewood, deliver freshly baked bread, pull laundry carts, and ore carts in mines.
However, these industries have changed, and native miniature donkeys are no longer used for these purposes and are almost extinct in their land of origin. They have been crossed with standard sized donkeys to create a more versatile work animal.
Because of this, the miniature donkeys have global genetic value, and are gaining popularity globally.
Although they’re capable of light work, they make much better pets. Miniature donkeys are inexpensive to live with, and almost trouble free as they are hardy and live long.
These dwarf donkeys are very affectionate, extremely comical and a joy to own.
They truly care for their owners family and equivalent to a pet dog. They have highly adaptable personalities that lend themselves to a myriad of situations.
Miniature donkeys have been known to live longer, and the average life span is 25 to 35 years, but, with good nutrition and proper care. The height of a mature miniature donkey is 36″ and even less which makes them easy to handle for both adults and children.
There are many activities one can do with a miniature donkey. It will be great fun for children to ride in a cart pulled by such a donkey. Also, one can take them to fairs, nursing homes, birthday parties and other venues. They’ll be a hit wherever you take them, and they’ll enjoy the adventure as well.
However, if you decide to keep these lovely miniatures, remember to take at least two of them because they don’t like being alone. Although they are small, they will need a lot of space. Pamper them, and see the love returned manifold.
