Travelling around the world, taking in the sights and sounds of different culture is a pipe dream of many. Very few are actually able to do it and that too all on their own. Solo travel has picked up in a big way in India, but even now, most avid travellers admit some company makes the experience all the more enriching. However, Hyderabadi girl Ankitha Prakash has no such hang ups, she has travelled to a whopping 22 countries solo and recounts all that she has seen on her blog www.discoverythroughjourney.com.

“Since childhood, I always noticed how my grandfather planned for vacations and would manage all the trips easily. It definitely laid the foundation for my travel planning. I have been travelling for a long time now, but the idea of exploring a place by capturing it on my camera Nikon D5500 and penning down my experiences struck me when I turned 23,” shares Ankitha.

It was around this time that the Tarnaka resident moved to Bologna, Italy to pursue her Masters in Civil Engineering from the prestigious University of Bologna. “I kept busy in research and studying, but I definitely needed a way to enjoy my leisure time. The thought of writing blogs about the places I have been to and share my stories in a way that would be of some help to other travellers became my motivation,” adds Ankitha who is now pursuing a PhD in the USA. Travelling solo, she says has opened a whole new world for her.

“In fact, a person can develop more skills when he or she travels. Every place has its own beauty, all we need to do is go explore in the right way. When I was doing my Masters in Italy, I found that we get student discounts in travelling which became a plus point for me,” says the civil engineer. Ankitha is also happy that her parents encouraged her in her leisure pursuits.

“My mom was always my first teacher; I can’t imagine myself without her. She gave me the freedom to explore. Coming from an engineering-oriented family, my eye always used to go towards the structures and interior designs. When I visited Europe, I got to see the beautiful monuments and historical structures. So it was very educational for me,” concludes Ankitha who advises people to utilise the cost-friendly public transport when travelling abroad to save money that can be spent on other enjoyable activities.
