Visakhapatnam: The State Government would develop as many as 19 first grade playgrounds in Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced here on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering after unveiling a pylon erected to commemorate the first ever cricket Test in the city at the YSR ACA-VDCA Stadium at Pothina Mallayya Palem, Naidu said sports complexes would be constructed at Amaravati, Tirupati, Srikakulam, and Kakinada.

“At present, four cricket academies were being run in the State and the facilities provided here would lead to several top sportsmen emerging from the State in future,” he said. “These sportsmen will spread our glory to far and wide. The Test status will enhance the image of Visakhapatnam in the world,” he stated.

Naidu said he was delighted to find the young children enjoying the cricket match and added that after watching them he felt like doing the same.

He watched the match for 45 minutes and said he enjoyed watching it.

Though the Chief Minister was sitting in the VIP Box, he said he prefered to watch the match in the gallery. He greeted noted film star Gollapudi Maruti Rao who was sitting in the stands.

Earlier, the Chief Minister honoured cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Sastri, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman, Sanjay Manjrekar, L Sivaramakrishnan and England cricketers Nasir Hussain, Mike Atherton, and Chief Selector of Indian cricket team MSK Raju and presented them with mementos.

Naidu also spoke to veteran England cricketer Geoff Boycott. The latter asked him to stay for more time, which he refused saying he had some other commitments outside.
