Hyderabad: Telangana State sailing team put on a dominating show by winning six medals after sending its largest contingent to the India International Regatta and Youth Nationals in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.
The 26 member team from the State won three silver and three bronze medals to notch up an impressive display in a tournament featuring 12 countries including Sweden, Hong Kong and Thailand.
11-year-old Sachin Bethamalla of Shaikpet Model School bagged two silver medals – one in the Youth Nationals optimist green fleet category with 29 points while the other coming from an impressive silver winning display in the sub-junior green fleet section of the India International Regatta.
Another promising sailor from the State, Rishab Nayar, who moved from the laser category to the laser radial, raised a few eyebrows as he collected 29 points and returned a silver in his maiden attempt in the Youth Nationals. He also won the third spot in the International event in the same category.
Telangana State champion Gautham Kantla registered a hard-fought third place finish with 132 points in the optimist sub-junior fleet section of the Youth Nationals. The Udbhav School student Gautham’s performance was hampered by two disqualifications and a wrong reading of a mark, losing his hopes of a title victory to Tamil Nadu sailors Neelanand who bagged the gold and Navyn Prabhakar who finished second.
“Gautham sailed as a man possessed and it is good to see him move into the juniors this year and sign off with a national medal. He could have fared a bit better were it not for a handful of unforced errors and disqualifications, “said Suheim Sheikh his coach at the Yacht Club.
Juhi Desai turned out to be the only girl from the State to win a medal as she grabbed a bronze in the junior laser section of the Youth Nationals.
