Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation on Monday night removed the three statues erected on the beach road illegally.

The statues of film star Akkineni Nageswara Rao, director Dasari Narayana Rao and actor Nandamuri Harikrishna came up all of a sudden overnight on November 30 on the beach road and on the next morning, HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao unveiled them to mark his birthday.

However, since the statues had come up without valid permission and the Minister had set a bad precedent by unveiling them, social activist in the city Bolisetty Satyanarayana filed a petition in the High Court which directed the removal of the statues lacking valid permission from the civic authorities.

Fearing opposition from film fans during day light, the GVMC chose to remove them around midnight on Monday using huge cranes. Former Rajya Sabha member ‘Padmabhushan’ Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad was said to be behind the erection of statues, particularly for Harikrishna who was instrumental in facilitating his entry into the Parliament upper house.
