Hyderabad: Former Chairman, University Grants Commissioner (UGC), Prof Sukhadeo Thorat has called for stepping up research on crucial socio-political and economic issues.
Addressing participants after inaugurating Dr BR Ambedkar Research Centre and unveiling Ambedkar bust on the Osmania University (OU) campus here on Friday, Prof Thorat said the research centre should focus on issues like political freedom, discrimination, legal safe guards against discrimination, centre-State relations, reorganisation of States, secularism, minority and women inclusion, economic development , labour policy, water and power policy and the plans for the poor and children.
“It is time to take forward the ideas of Dr Ambedkar which were far ahead of his times. He could foresee solutions to complex problems and there is a need to seek long term solutions for contemporary issues,” he observed.
The research centre should encourage multi-disciplinary research and include diverse subjects like sociology, history, political science, philosophy, law and economics, he suggested.
Prof S Ramachandram, V-C, OU expressed his happiness over setting up of the Dr BR Ambedkar Research Centre and hoped it would emerge as a research hub in the years to come.
Founder Director and Officer on Special Duty, OU, Prof T Krishna Rao, said he would strive to make the new centre more vibrant focusing on the ideals and vision of Dr Ambedkar.
Earlier Prof Thorat named the university library as Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar Library.
Dr Errolla Srinivas, Chairman, Telangana State Commission for SC and ST, Dr Vidya Sagar, Member, Telangana State Commission for SC and ST, Prof R Limbadri, Vice-Chairman I, TS Council of Higher Education, CH Gopal Reddy, Registrar, and top university officials also took part in the event.
