Hyderabad: To minimise the usage of plastic, Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, South Central Railway (SCR) launched the ‘Swachhata hi Seva’ campaign and participated in various cleanliness activities at Kacheguda station on Wednesday.

As a part of this campaign, Mallya inspected food stalls to ensure hygiene and advised the staff to maintain cleanliness and minimise the use of plastic. He interacted with the passengers to create awareness on the ill effects of plastic and advised them to reduce the use of single-use plastic.

The Ministry of Railways has issued instructions such as ban on single-use plastic, restriction on use of plastic carry bags and to reduce, reuse and refuse plastic products and instead use inexpensive reusable bags to reduce the plastic footprint. This apart, authorities were told to set up plastic bottle crushing machines at all railway stations in a phased manner.

Apart from keeping the station premises clean, SCR is now putting emphasis on making necessary arrangements to minimise generation of plastic waste and also ensuring its eco-friendly disposal. Meanwhile, the Swachhata campaign would be held at all the zonal and divisional levels till October 2.
