Hyderabad: Taruni Fair, an exclusive women exhibition by Hyderabad Metro was opened at Taruni Madhuranagar Metro Station, here on Saturday.
The fair, which will go on for 60 days, with nearly 130 stalls offering women and children centric products like clothes, stationery, organic food and home utilities. Amusement rides for children are also available at the fair with a food arena. The fair will be open from 5 pm to 10.30 pm for next two months with free entry.
Speaking at the inaugural function, HMR MD NVS Reddy said it was a socio-economic initiative to empower women and offer them job opportunities. “As many as 80 per cent of the employees at Madhuranagar Metro station are women. As far as I know, no other station is India or the world is dedicated to women,” he noted.
ACP (crime), Shikha Goel said, “Remember, India is looking at you now as you are the first employees of an all women metro station, perhaps the only in the whole world. You’ll be role models to all the women and girls out there”.
Karuna Gopal, president of Foundation of Futuristic Cities, said there is a dire need to have ‘all women’ station and exhibition for the livelihood and the empowerment of women. GHMC Zonal Commissioner, D Harichandana pointed out the importance of how the exhibition would encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship of women from different strata of the society and encourage women participation in the work force.
Currently, Madhuranagar station has 44 female employees who work on two shifts. To make the work place inclusive and safe, they only work for morning and afternoon shift and are offered shuttle services during night.
“Working here feels safe and special. It is a proud moment to witness so many women working together to make Hyderabad Metro functional,” said Prashanthi, Station Manager, Madhura Nagar Metro Station.
