Visakhapatnam: Political observers are not dismissing the chances of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to win all the three Rajya Sabha seats in the elections to the upper house next week.
They say such a move is expected because the TDP in the last couple of years was successful in luring as many as 23 MLAs from the YSR Congress Party to its fold.
As things stand, the TDP can win two seats on its own. But by winning the third, it can strike a near death-blow on the YSRC from which the latter may not recover till the next elections, observers feel.
For this, the TDP needs the support of just two legislators from the YSRC to cross vote. Going by the past experience, it may not be difficult, it is said. The TDP is likely to come out with offers of ministerial berths which are lying vacant after the resignation of Kamineni Srinivas and P Manikyala Rao of BJP. They hope that some YSRC MLAs who are not confident of getting re-nomination by the party to contest in the next elections may cross the floor in time, notwithstanding the plans of YSRC which even wants to take its MLAs abroad lest they should be lured by the ruling party.
TDP has 102 MLAs and has support of two Independents. The BJP has four MLAs. Even if the TDP gets the support of two more YCP MLAs, it should ensure that the second priority vote is also in order which only can see its third candidate through.
Meanwhile, the TDP is about to complete the exercise of choosing its nominees. Initially, it wanted to field only two people — renominate CM Ramesh and field either Varla ramaiah or B Masthan Yadav. But its advisers reportedly suggested it could take a chance by fielding a third candidate giving opportunity to Reddy community, for, the YSRC has already announced its nominee, V Prabhakara Reddy, an industrialist from Nellore district.
