Hyderabad: A 29-year-old chemistry teacher of a prominent school in the city was arrested by the Cyber Cell police, Cyberabad, here on Wednesday on charges of sexually assaulting a minor boy.

The incident, which took place in the second week of this month, came to light when the Balala Hakkula Sangham approached the police.

Police said the suspect, identified as Srikanth Powar alias Kushal, a native of Nizamabad and resident of Kukatpally, was working as a chemistry teacher here. The victim, a minor and cousin of the suspect, came to the city as part of his summer vacation and stayed at Powar’s house.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Cyber Cell, CH Y Srinivas Kumar said Powar assaulted the boy when he slept beside him, but the boy didn’t complain to family members or his parents.

However, a conversation in a WhatsApp group, which was created by the suspect for the LGBT community, exposed the act. BHS honorary president Achyutha Rao said one of the BHS members got access to the conversation Powar had in the group.

“Immediately, the Cyber Cell police were consulted and screenshots of the conversation were submitted,” he said.

The ACP said that based on the evidence provided, the victim was contacted.

“However, we couldn’t get information as he was not able to share anything now. Considering the boy’s mental health, we have decided to inquire with him once he recovers,” he said, adding that Powar confessed to having committed the crime.

Based on a complaint lodged by Rao, a case has been booked and the suspect was handed over to the Kukatpally police for further investigation.
