Hyderabad: Telangana has broken into the top five high-performance States in the NITI Aayog’s first-ever Innovation Index released on Thursday. Telangana was ranked fourth in the Innovation Index rankings while Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra were the top three and Haryana was fifth.
The idea behind the index was to analyse innovation at the State level. The States were ranked based on their innovation capability, the challenges and opportunities that lie for them and actions needed by policymakers to foster innovation.
The NITI Aayog gave Telangana a score of 22.06 in the overall performance while Andhra Pradesh got a score of 14.51 (10th rank). Karnataka, the top-performing State, received a score of 35, followed by Tamil Nadu (32) and Maharashtra (29).
Among the South Indian States, Telangana stood third in the Innovation Index while Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were the top two. Kerala was ranked sixth with a score of 19.58.
According to NITI Aayog, the parameters that were considered for the index include human capital, investment, knowledge workers, business environment, safety and legal environment. The index is an attempt to create a framework for continual evaluation of all the States.
The Index was released on Thursday by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Rajiv Kumar and CEO Amitabh Kant.
