Telangana Consumer Forum slaps Rs 50,000 penalty on Godrej & Boyce

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (TSCDRF) has imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company Limited for not replacing damaged goods and missing parts of products supplied within the stipulated period of time.

Judgment came in the wake of a complaint filed by a customer, Chandra Sekhar Kallakuracha, a resident of Gachibowli, who told the Forum that the goods delivered to him by the company were found damaged when the technician opened the packing on August 4, 2015. Chandra Sekhar had purchased furniture for his residence at Gachibowli on January 30, 2015 and paid a sum of Rs 3,48,896. According to Sekhar, the company had promised to replace the missing and damaged items in a month’s time but failed to do so. “The items were delivered in August after the completion of my house but even after repeated enquiries until November 2015, the company failed to replace two items of recliner sofa and the damaged coffee table,” Sekhar informed.

Sekhar filed a complaint with the Consumer Forum regarding the same on February 10, 2016 after waiting for a reply to his email to the company to replace the furniture that he had purchased from them. While Godrej & Boyce admitted that there were a few damages and missing parts when the products were delivered to the customer in August 2015, they denied that the company did not respond to the email in January 2016. The company also submitted that there was no deficiency of services from their side as the installation was done on time.

However, after listening to arguments of both parties and perusing documents submitted as evidence, the Forum stated that since the consumer was able to establish a case of deficiency of service from the company, it was of the view that “Rs 50,000 towards compensation would adequately meet the ends of justice.” Godrej & Boyce has been directed to pay Chandra Sekhar Rs 50,000 within one month along with a sum of Rs 5,000 towards costs.
