Hyderabad: Medical and Health Minister C Laxma Reddy said Telangana was the only State paying a honorarium of Rs 6,000 to Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers.

Replying to a question in the State Assembly, the Minister said 27,045 ASHA workers had been appointed in the State and they were given 23 days training with the intention to provide best medical services in rural areas.

The Minister said some more States are now exploring possibility of raising the honorarium for ASHA workers in their States. The government is also willing to increase the number of ASHA workers if the need was felt, he said, even as he ruled out increasing honorarium to them stating that they were appointed according to the guidelines of National Health Mission (NHM) which doesn’t support high honorarium.
