Telangana officials told to promote Gollabhama sarees

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to initiate measures to provide better marketing facility for the popular Gollabhama sarees of Siddipet district. The officials were suggested to ensure prominent display and special promotion of Gollabhama sarees at all Golconda showrooms run by the State government.

Handlooms and Textiles Minister KT Rama Rao and Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao reviewed the problems being faced by weavers from Medak, Sangareddy and Siddipet districts at the Secretariat on Wednesday. They observed that despite its popularity, Gollabhama sarees needed better marketing facilities for the benefit of weavers who weave the saree unique to Siddipet handloom industry.

Officials have been asked to examine various marketing facilities and prepare an action plan for the promotion of Gollabhama sarees. Further, Harish Rao asked the officials to provide necessary equipment to about 30 weavers who specialise in weaving Gollabhama sarees on handlooms.

The Ministers also discussed the implementation of various welfare and development programmes being taken up by the State government for weavers in the State including Nethannaku Cheyutha, Chenetha Mitra, modernisation of looms, and other schemes.

To create awareness among weavers on the government schemes, Minister KT Rama Rao decided to conduct a series of district level weavers conferences and directed the officials to make necessary arrangements to launch the programme in Siddipet.

Rama Rao asked the officials of Textiles Department to provide necessary funds for construction of Weavers Cooperative Society buildings at Dubbaka, Cheryala and Siddipet. He wanted them to examine the feasibility to provide loans to weavers from Telangana State Finance Corporation without seeking guarantee. He also inquired about implementation of loan waiver for weavers in these districts.

The Ministers along with Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy examined samples of Bathukamma sarees to be distributed to women in the Telangana State on the occasion of Bathukamma festivities.
