Telangana: Policemen with body-worn cameras on bandobast duty

The body worn cameras of the traffic police are being put to use for mounting surveillance at sensitive polling stations in the State.

Hyderabad: For peaceful conduct of elections and monitoring of polling process on Thursday, the Telangana police has decided to make optimum use of various cameras available with it.

The body worn cameras of the traffic police are being put to use for mounting surveillance at sensitive polling stations in the State. The traffic police personnel deputed on bandobast duty at the polling stations and special teams will wear the body-worn cameras and capture any untoward incident. The recordings from these cameras would be downloaded and analysed.

The body worn cameras were procured for the traffic police following complaints of harassment and demands for bribe by the cops during vehicle checking. The cameras are also used to record indecent or rude behaviour of the public with the traffic police.

“All the traffic policemen including ASIs and SIs on duty at the polling stations will wear the body worn cameras. Mostly it will be hidden,” said an official of Rachakonda.

Also, the policemen were asked to record any untoward incident using their mobile phones and forward through WhatsApp, it would enable higher up officials get information straight from the spot and help them in taking decisions on handling the situation and identify the trouble mongers.

Special branch personnel to be deployed in plain clothes have also been asked to record any untoward incident in or outside the polling station using mobile phones. “All personnel carry mobile phones and we have asked them to record any malpractice, trouble or clashes using the phones. The local police will also have videographers to film any unlawful incident,” said an official from Cyberabad Special Branch.

On outskirts, the police have deployed spotters to keep a watch on those coming from other places and attempting to create trouble during the polling. The spotters have been deployed at railway stations, bus stations and other private bus transit points. They are also being deployed at temporary shelters such as lodges, guest houses and hostels in all the three Commissionerates of Hyderabad, Rachakonda and Cyberabad.
