Hyderabad: Telangana boys and girls under-16 teams started off their campaign on a winning note in the 36th Youth National Basketball Championship at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
Telangana boys eased past Jharkhand 63-34 in the boys contest as Khaja top-scored with 20 points. In the girls clash, Telangana team beat Jharkhand 59-38 with Swati (14) and Harshita (13) doing the bulk of the scoring.
Telangana boys team outpaced the Jharkhand defense with Jasim using his height to good effect, Khaja driving in well with accurate passes from Anthony as they led 25-7 at end of the first quarter. After the change of ends, Telangana continued to find the net through Kartik and Surya combining well to lead 47-25 at the end of the third quarter and comfortably winning the match 63-34.
Telangana girls were leading 11-10 at the end of the first quarter. With the introduction of Swati and Harshitha, Telangana increased the scoring with as many as 19 points coming in the second quarter. Telangana were leading 36-34 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Telangana girls regrouped themselves, scoring 23 points and restricting Jharkhand to just 4 points to win the match 59-38.
