Hyderabad: Several educational societies pitched in for establishing private hotel management colleges in Telangana this year to meet the increasing demand for the course.

The Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE), which invited applications from registered educational societies for starting new private unaided hotel management colleges in the academic year 2020-21, received 23 applications. While there are more than 1,000 degree colleges across the State, only some offer the hotel management programme.

“There are only a few recognised educational institutions offering hotel management course, but there is a good demand for it in the State. So, it was decided to invite applications from recognised educational societies for establishing private unaided hotel management colleges for 2020-21,” a senior official said.

TSCHE authorities are scrutinising the applications, after which they will inspect the proposed colleges. The joint inspection committee will comprise nominees of TSCHE, the university concerned and the Commission of Collegiate Education.

On the basis of the committee’s report submitted by the vice-chancellor of the university concerned, the TSCHE will decide on whether to accord permission for a new private unaided hotel management college. After obtaining affiliation from the university concerned, the newly approved colleges can offer hotel management and catering technology programmes.

Meanwhile, the TSCHE is making plans to introduce two new programmes — BSc in Data Science and BCom in Business Analytics — from the next academic year. It constituted an expert committee to come up with a curriculum.

To start with, only a few select colleges — autonomous and prominent ones — will be granted permission to offer the courses from next academic year. Admissions will be based on merit secured in the qualifying examination.

The two new programmes will be offered at institutions in collaboration with a leading multinational company, which already agreed to it in-principle. A memorandum of understanding will be soon signed in this regard.
