Tension at Reddy Poruyatra

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed in Medchal following an attempt by several agitators belonging to the Telangana Reddy Aikya Vedika (TRAV) to lay siege to the Medchal police station on Thursday.

The protesters, who gathered as part of the 10th day of the Reddy Poruyatra – Padayatra, which began in Siricilla on October 2, were stopped on the city outskirts when they were heading towards Pragathi Bhavan in the city. Though police took 130 agitators into preventive custody, more gathered around noon at the police station demanding their release.

The members detained included TRAV president A Santosh Reddy and working president A Ram Reddy. Police had to resort to lathi-charge as the situation was began spiralling out of control along the Medchal Highway, with the traffic coming to a standstill. Medchal Inspector S Venkat Reddy said the protesters had entered the city without permission.

“Despite being cautioned, the agitators refused to go back. As there was no other option left in order to disperse the crowd, we had to resort to lathi-charge,” the Inspector said.

During the lathi-charge, a person identified as R Srinivas Reddy, a native of Zaheerabad, was injured and was given first-aid in a local private hospital.

Meanwhile, in a statement, TRAV alleged that the members taken into preventive custody were tortured by the police and demanded action against the officers responsible.
