Tension between China and other countries

While the US does not claim rights over any territory in the region, it supports the claims of various Southeast Asian countries and has historically supported it by conducting Freedom of Navigation Operations (FONOPs) in the South China Sea.

China has disputes with Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Singapore, Brunei, Nepal, Bhutan, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar and Tibet. While the US does not claim rights over any territory in the region, it supports the claims of various Southeast Asian countries and has historically supported it by conducting Freedom of Navigation Operations (FONOPs) in the South China Sea. Let’s take a look at recent major flashpoints causing tension between China and other countries

Hong Kong:  Beijing imposed a controversial national security law (NSL) on the territory

Xinjiang : Treatment of Uighurs, including the rounding up of people in so-called “training centres”

Taiwan: China claims sovereignty over the the democratic, self-governing island

Border issues: Including the South China Sea, and other contested territories

Trade terms: Persistent disagreements about terms of trade

United States

Closed the Chinese consulate in Houston, saying it was a spying “hub”, China retaliated by closing the US mission in Chengdu

Dispute over trade deficit, the two sides have imposed punitive customs duties

Sanctions on Huawei, pressure on allies to follow suit

The US has frozen assets of officials linked to China’s Xinjiang policies

The US suspended HK’s preferential trade treatment after the passing of the NSL

Critical of China in the South China Sea, has sent aircraft carriers to the region for drills

US President Trump angered Beijing by calling Covid-19 a “Chinese” virus

Britain

Suspended its extradition treaty with HK after the NSL; offered immigration path to more than 2 million Hong Kong residents

Foreign secretary accused Beijing of “gross” human rights abuses in Xinjiang

Dropped Huawei from its 5G network

India

Has banned more than 100 Chinese mobile apps on national security and privacy concerns

20 soldiers were killed in a confrontation with Chinese troops at Galwan Valley in June

Taiwan

President Tsai Ing-wen rejects the idea of “one China” and views the island as de facto independent

Opened an office to help Hong Kongers relocate to Taiwan
