Sangareddy: What’s in a name and Patlolla in particular? Well, many voters have been asking this question during this poll season as at least three persons with Patlolla as surname (locally called as Intiperu) are contesting from three different constituencies in Telangana.

Not only in the current elections, several candidates with Patlolla as surname, contested the elections and won multiple times too. People with surname Patlolla belong to Reddy community in the State.

Former Medak MLA, Patlolla Sasidhar Reddy, is contesting polls on an NCP ticket from Medak, while Patlolla Sanjeeva Reddy, son of late Congress leader and four-time MLA from Narayankhed filed his nomination on a BJP ticket for Narayankhed and former Home Minister Patlolla Sabitha Indra Reddy is now contesting on a Congress ticket from Maheshwaram in Rangareddy district.

The list doesn’t end here, these are only a few names in the fray in the present elections, several people having Patlolla as their surname, got elected to the State Assembly besides holding prominent posts, in the past. Patlolla Manik Reddy, who died recently, was elected to Parliament on a TDP ticket.

Former Assembly Speaker Patlolla Ramachandra Reddy was elected to State Assembly five times from Sangreddy Assembly Constituency. Contesting as an Independent, he had defeated Congress leader Patlolla Veera Reddy in 1983.

Patlolla Narasimha Reddy won Zaheerabad constituency in 1989 on a Congress ticket and lost the following election. From Medak Constituency, Patlolla Narayana Reddy, father of Patlolla Sasidhar Reddy also got elected on a Congress ticket in 1989 and lost the following election. Sasidhar Reddy’s own brother Upendar Reddy is contesting on Congress ticket now, but he was carrying Ammannagari Surname since he was reportedly given to adoption to a close relative.

Patlola Kista Reddy, Patlolla Sanjeeva Reddy’s father, was elected four times to State Assembly from Narayankhed. Sabitha Indra Reddy’s husband was elected four times to Assembly from Chevella while her son Karthik Reddy had also contested as an MP but in a losing cause in the last election. Ramachandra Reddy, Indra Reddy, Sabita Indra Reddy had served as the Ministers in State cabinet.

Though Reddy’s have played a crucial role in Telangana politically, it is interesting to see so many MLAs with Patlolla surname getting elected from here. However, there was no MLA in the State Assembly in the previous Assembly. Patlolla Kista Reddy, who was elected as an MLA in 2014 died in 2016. TRS had bagged the seat in a by-election.
