Vizianagaram: The Fort Town on Saturday woke up with the shock of the historic Three Lanterns pillar at the Moodu Lantarla Junction missing.
The over century old pillar in the heart of the town was removed as part of road-widening programme by the municipal authorities who are promising to construct a similar pillar at a cost of Rs.5 lakh.
Former Union Minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju strongly resented the act and said that a cultural symbol of the town carrying the national symbol of three lions was destroyed much to the chagrin of the local people. The Three Lanterns was built to commemorate the bravery of women who rescued Mahatma Gandhi’s personal secretary Madhav Desai who was beaten up severely by the British during the freedom struggle. No edifice could be a replacement for the historic pillar, he commented.
