Hyderabad: Three more persons were arrested by the city police, including actor Surya Prakash, in connection with the murder of NRI businessman Chigurapati Jayaram in January. Earlier, four others, including prime accused Rakesh Reddy, were arrested.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) AR Srinivas said the accused, Surya Prakash and Kishore, who were friends of Rakesh Reddy, were arrested for cheating and illegally confining Jayaram.
“The duo had conned Jayaram by pretending to be a fictitious woman Veena and lured him to the flat of Rakesh Reddy at Jubilee Hills Road No 10 where he was confined, forced to sign some documents and arrange money and was later killed,” said the DCP.
Surya Prakash, who is a mimicry artiste, called up Jayaram pretending to be Veena. “While chatting, Surya Prakash spoke like Veena and told Jayaram that two persons will pick him and escort him to an apartment in Jubilee Hills.
Jayaram fell for it and went along with Surya and Kishore to the flat of Rakesh Reddy,” said AR Srinivas.
Another accused, Anji Reddy, a friend of Rakesh Reddy, was arrested for concealing evidence and preserving documents.
“Rakesh Reddy had forced Jayaram to sign some documents before killing him. Anji Reddy, who is a friend of Jayaram, had kept those documents with him and failed to inform the police. Moreover, in his presence, Rakesh Reddy and his driver had shifted Jayaram’s body to the car and drove to Andhra Pradesh,”the official said.
To a question about the role of police officials whose names figured in the call data history, the DCP said the officers were provided with a questionnaire as part of the probe and a few of them have furnished their replies. “Our senior officials will go through it and take appropriate action,” he said.
Meanwhile, the police have said Rakesh Reddy had threatened and blackmailed Pragati Resorts owner GBK Rao and his family and forced him to part with 20,000 square yards of land and another three-acre odd land parcel in Manikonda.
“The 20,000 square yard land was registered in the name of one Bhudevi, who is a servant working with the family of Rakesh Reddy. She appears to be a benami to the transaction and accordingly, action will be initiated. Another land parcel of 3.25 acre was registered in the name of Venala logistics, and we are verifying the transaction,” said Srinivas.
The police suspect that a few more persons might have been victimised by Rakesh Reddy and asked the victims to lodge complaints.
