Hyderabad: A top Maoist leader Chalapathy, who is believed to be the mastermind of many attacks on politicians and security forces in Andhra Odisha border, escaped from police dragnet on Tuesday night, according to reports reaching here on Wednesday morning.
Reports said a team of the Andhra Pradesh Grey Hounds raided a camp south of Sileru project and a fierce gun battle ensued. It was believed that the Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee member Chalapathy accompanied by over 100 armed guerrillas was camping at the place. As the firing ensued, the top leader managed to escape along with his comrades, police sources told Telangana Today.
Security forces recovered three rifles and many kitbags from the scene of encounter, which took place on the border of Visakhapatnam rural and East Godavari districts.
Chalapathy, acknowledged as one of the best Maoist leaders in fieldcraft, was believed to the mastermind behind the killing of Araku legislator Kidarin Sarveshwara Rao and former MLA Siveri Soma in 2018. He is stated to be extremely capable of pulling off military offensives against security forces.
