Hyderabad: The State government has, within a span of just one year, constructed 364 scientific godowns with a capacity of 18.30 lakh metric tonne, Marketing Minister T Harish Rao said here on Thursday.
Replying to a question raised by Council members Palla Rajeshwar Reddy and Puranama Satish Kumar, the Minister said in undivided Andhra Pradesh, only 4 lakh metric tonne of godown space was constructed in Telangana region, while after Telangana State was formed, the government constructed an additional 18.30 lakh MT capacity godowns by investing Rs 818.14 crore.
“Nowhere in the country have 364 scientific godowns been constructed within one year, and now, TS has the highest godown capacity in the country,” Rao said.
He said the government was ready to increase the number of godowns further provided they are not left unused. The government has requested NABARD to study the requirement of godowns in the State and submit its report. “Once NABARD submits its report, the government will sanction further godowns,” the Minister said, adding that these godowns were used for advance storage of fertilizers and seeds besides stocking produce.
The Minister said due to availability of public godowns with low rental charges, agencies such as Civil Supplies, MARKFED and HACA had saved Rs 8.4 crore.
