Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Task Force raided a kite shop at Rasoolpura in Begumpet and arrested two persons on charges of illegal stocking, sale and use of banned Chinese manja (nylon thread and glass coated manja for flying kites) here on Friday. Officials seized material worth Rs 1.6 lakh from them.

The arrested persons were identified as Mohammed Akbar and Mohammed Mujaffar Ali, both residents of Rasoolpura.

According to the police, the arrested persons, both brothers, were selling kites and various brands of manja for last 15 years and had plotted to sell Chinese manja to make some extra money. They procured the synthetic thread from an agent in Uttar Pradesh and were selling it to customers here.

As per the State government orders under section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, there is a complete ban on procuring, stocking, sale and use of nylon thread, which is commonly called as ‘Chinese dor’, or other synthetic (non- biodegradable) threads coated with glass or other harmful substances, used for kite flying or other purposes, which is likely to cause grievous injury and inconvenience to animals including birds as well as human beings.
