India initiates steps to bring back body of Hyderabadi shot dead in Kansas

Two men believed to be of Telugu origin were shot at in a bar shooting in Olathe of Kansas in the United States late on Wednesday.

Hyderabad: The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has on Friday initiated procedures to bring the mortal remains of Srinivas Kuchibotla, a resident of Hyderabad who was shot dead at Olathe in Kansas late on Wednesday.

Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, who expressed her shock over the incident, tweeted this morning that she had spoken to Indian Ambassador in the US, Navtej Sarma. The Consulate General of India in Houston RD Joshi and Vice Consul H. Singh have reached Kansas as well.

According to the Houston CGI, Mr. Joshi has already met Alok Madasani, a colleague of Srinivas Kuchibotla in the Aviation Systems Engineering team of Garmin and who was also injured in the shooting, which was in the Austin Bar and Grill in south Olathe. Mr. Madasani has been discharged from hospital, the Consul tweeted.

Meanwhile, Ms. Swaraj said she had spoken to Srinivas Kuchibotla’s father and KK Shastri, brother of Srinivas, in Hyderabad. She, apart from conveying her condolences, has assured the family of all help and assistance.

In the US, friends and colleagues of Srinivas have launched a crowdfunding initiative via under the title ‘Srinu’s Family/Recovery Support’. The initiative, spearheaded by his former colleague Kavipriya Muthuramalingam, has already seen 236,516$ being raised by 6,443 people in 10 hours. The target is 150k$.

A similar crowdfunding is on to help Ian Grillot, the third person who was injured in the shootout. Maggie Grillot, Ian’s brother, indicated that Ian had tried to intervene when Adam Purinton, the suspect arrested in connection with the shootout, hurled verbal abuses allegedly with racial slurs before shooting Srinivas and Alok.

Ms. Muthuramalingam noted that Srinivas’s wife Sunayana and his family were “now faced with incredible grief and a multitude of expenses”. The fund was to help them with funeral expenses and other ongoing grief/recovery support costs.

Hyderabad: Two men believed to be of Telugu origin were shot at in a bar shooting in Olathe of Kansas in the United States late on Wednesday, with one of them succumbing to his injuries, according to reports reaching here.

As per reports in Kansas media, both the men were employees of the Aviation Systems Engineering team at Garmin, headquartered in Olathe. According to a report in The Kansas City Star, in an email to employees, Garmin officials identified the fatal victim as employee Srinivas Kuchibhotla. The injured man was identified as Alok Madasani. Earlier in February in a similar incident a techie from Warangal was shot dead.

“Unfortunately, two associates on our Aviation Systems Engineering team, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, were shot. We are devastated to inform you that Srinivas passed away and Alok is currently recovering in the hospital,” the Kansas City Star quoted Garmin as saying in the email.

Alok Madasani was reportedly injured.

Kuchibhotla, the newspaper said, held a master’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso and had earned his bachelor’s degree from the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, as per his biodata on LinkedIn. Madasani, again as per information on LinkedIn, was an aviation program coordinator manager at Garmin. He studied at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and at the Vasavi College of Engineering.

A third victim, Ian Grillot, was shot in the hand and shoulder, the report said. One person, Adam Purinton, has been held by the police in connection with the incident. There were no further details so far about the victims in the shootout, which was reported in the Austins Bar and Grill in south Olathe.
