Hyderabad: The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has on Friday initiated procedures to bring the mortal remains of Srinivas Kuchibotla, a resident of Hyderabad who was shot dead at Olathe in Kansas late on Wednesday.

Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, who expressed her shock over the incident, tweeted this morning that she had spoken to Indian Ambassador in the US, Navtej Sarma. The Consulate General of India in Houston RD Joshi and Vice Consul H. Singh have reached Kansas as well.

According to the Houston CGI, Mr. Joshi has already met Alok Madasani, a colleague of Srinivas Kuchibotla in the Aviation Systems Engineering team of Garmin and who was also injured in the shooting, which was in the Austin Bar and Grill in south Olathe. Mr. Madasani has been discharged from hospital, the Consul tweeted.

Meanwhile, Ms. Swaraj said she had spoken to Srinivas Kuchibotla’s father and KK Shastri, brother of Srinivas, in Hyderabad. She, apart from conveying her condolences, has assured the family of all help and assistance.

In the US, friends and colleagues of Srinivas have launched a crowdfunding initiative via www.gofundme.com under the title ‘Srinu’s Family/Recovery Support’. The initiative, spearheaded by his former colleague Kavipriya Muthuramalingam, has already seen 236,516$ being raised by 6,443 people in 10 hours. The target is 150k$.

A similar crowdfunding is on to help Ian Grillot, the third person who was injured in the shootout. Maggie Grillot, Ian’s brother, indicated that Ian had tried to intervene when Adam Purinton, the suspect arrested in connection with the shootout, hurled verbal abuses allegedly with racial slurs before shooting Srinivas and Alok.

Ms. Muthuramalingam noted that Srinivas’s wife Sunayana and his family were “now faced with incredible grief and a multitude of expenses”. The fund was to help them with funeral expenses and other ongoing grief/recovery support costs.
