Hyderabad: Alleging that several top Maoist leaders including Akkiraju Haragopal alias Ramakrishna alias RK were in the custody of the Andhra Pradesh Police, civil rights activist and poet Varavara Rao on Thursday asked the police release them immediately.

He claimed the police took into custody RK and others after the encounter in which 28 Maoists were gunned down on the Andhra Orissa Border.

“We are worried about the safety of those who are in custody as the police are releasing names of dead Maoists in a phased manner,” he said.

Speaking to the media after paying tributes to Maoist Prabhakar alias Hari alias Gangadhar who was killed in the encounter, Varavara Rao said 74 people led by RK ventured out in three groups.

“Based on information provided by a covert to the Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB), Greyhounds personnel based in Visakhapatnam swung into action. The police cross-checked the information by scouting the AOB using a helicopter. After confirming the information, they launched the search operation titled ‘Operation RK’, ‘Operation Green Hunt’ and ‘Operation 2016’ and killed the Maoists,” the Virasam leader said.

He held AP Director-General of Police N. Sambasiva Rao along with two other police officers – Mahesh Chandra Laddha and Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao – responsible for the incident.
