In the age of electric cars, horse riding can sound so excitingly adventurous. While some wealthy people still ride horses by going to elite clubs, the commoner usually just sighs about it.
Enter Finland, and the world can learn how every hobby can be indulged in, albeit partly. Girls in this northern European country are increasingly taking to a ‘sport’ called ‘hobby-horsing’, according to media reports and YouTube videos.
The idea is to go on horse rides at indoor stadiums, except that the horses are not real. Resembling the way children like to pretend they are riding a horse or taming a tiger, especially after they watch their favourite animation movies, girls in the age group of 12-18 years in Finland are ‘competing’ in this new sport.
Participants get an audience and are apparently given scores by professional judges based on proper posture and style. They jump with their ‘horses’ over obstacles and look as serious as any professional jockey out in the field.
