We all thought stopping carbs (rice, potatoes, etc) would reverse diabetes and halt its progression

Scientists now say even some reduction in carb, slight increase in protein intake, with healthy fats, can actually reverse diabetes

This was the finding of a study by ICMR-INDIAB

Study shows that diabetes reversal can happen when carb content is brought down to 49% from 54% and the protein increased from 19% to 20% and fat maintained around 21% to 26%

To prevent progression from pre-diabetes to diabetes, carb content of 54% to 57%, protein of 16% to 20% and fat of 20% to 24% would suffice

Dr R M Anjana, study’s first author says previous studies recommended a very low carbohydrate intake which is unsuitable for Indians

But now study shows that even a modest reduction in carbohydrate intake with an increase in protein, along with healthy fats, can help to both reverse diabetes as well as prevent its progression

Dr Seshadri Srinivasan carried out the quadratic programming problem (QPP) for the study

He says mathematical modelling was employed to predict both remission and prevention of diabetes at a population level using the ICMR-INDIAB diet data

The president of MDRF (Madras Diabetes Research Foundation) Dr V Mohan said Indians could even slightly change their dietary habits by decreasing their carbohydrate intake

He also said substituting carbohydrates with protein not only brings down diabetes but also prevents cardiovascular diseases

Do you know what in our diet supply us Carbohydrates, proteins and fats?

Carbs are found in a wide array of foods like rice, bread, potatoes, milk, soda, sweet- potatoes, pasta, all-purpose flour, etc.
