Indians in the US: Birthright citizenship and deportation

President Trump’s executive order redefines parameters of birthright citizenship as guaranteed by  14th amendment to US Constitution

Adopted in 1868, it grants citizenship to all born on US soil, regardless of parents’ immigration status

There were over  5.4 million Indian Americans as of 2024, comprising around 1.47% of total US population, as per US Census Bureau

Within this, roughly  two-thirds are first-generation immigrants, while the remaining are US-born citizens

As of 2023, over  2.9 million Indian immigrants were residing in the US

In 2024, India ranked second, accounting for 6.1% of all naturalised citizens, after Mexico (13.1%)

India represents the  4th-largest group of those detained, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement

Detained, Deported

Since 2009, 15,756 illegal Indian immigrants have been deported, said  EAM S Jaishankar. On Feb 6, 104 Indians were deported

India ranks 12th on the list of countries with the highest number of citizens deported from the US

India is the largest source of international students in the US; approx 3,50,000 students are enrolled in US institutions
