Over 10,000  Indian prisoners languishing in foreign jails, according to the government

They are in jails in  86 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Nepal, Pakistan, US, Sri Lanka, Spain, Russia, Israel, China, Bangladesh  and Argentina

2,633  Indian prisoners  in jails in  Saudi Arabia and  2,518  in UAE jails

1,317 Indian prisoners are  in jails in Nepal 266 in Pakistan and 98 in Sri Lanka

A large number of Indians, particularly people from Kerala, lodged in jails in Qatar after the FIFA World Cup

Indian  Missions/Posts monitor the incidents of Indian nationals being jailed

Apart from  extending consular assistance, the Indian Missions and Posts also assist in providing legal aid

No fee is charged from any Indian prisoner for extending facilities  by the Indian Embassy concerned

Indian Community Welfare Fund set up in Indian Missions & Posts abroad for assisting overseas Indian nationals in distress situations, says Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh

The support extended under the ICWF includes financial assistance to the Indian prisoners for legal aid as well as travel documents and air tickets during repatriation

India also entered into prisoner transfer treaties with many nations that allow  a person convicted  of a crime to be transferred to his or her home country to serve the prison sentence
