On Feb 13, India celebrates National Women’s Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of renowned poet and social activist Sarojini Naidu. This year marks her  146th birth anniversary

Known as the 'Nightingale of India' for her inspiring poetry, she was one of the most influential women of the 20th century

Born to Bengali parents in Hyderabad on February 13, 1879, she played a key role in India’s freedom movement

Sarojini Naidu was called the 'Bul Bul e Hind' after her collection of poems, Golden Threshold, was published  in 1905

Hyderabad is where she grew up and spent her formative years. The Golden Threshold near Abids where she lived was a centre of reformist ideas

University of Hyderabad is converting the iconic Golden Threshold building, which had housed the University. into a vibrant  cultural space 

Spread over 1.166 acres, it has three structures. The Golden Threshold and Gopal Clinic are old buildings. Centre for Distance Learning is a new one

On her 143rd birth anniversary, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority set up a stone plaque with her poem inscribed on it on Hussain Sagar  in 2022

In ‘The Hussain Saagar’ she describes the lake as a ‘living image of her soul’. The poem is an extract from her book ‘The Bird of Time’ 

She was instrumental in making Hyderabad famous through her works. Her poem  ‘The Bazars of Hyderabad earned a favourable review in The New York Times

Through 'Indian Weavers', the poetess showcases the weavers' cratsmanship,  back-breaking toil and the inevitability of the passage of time
