With fake fingerprints, two draw GHMC salaries of five for eight years
South Zone Task Force and the Bhavani Nagar police finally nabbed the two on charges of preparing duplicate thumb impressions of sweepers and using them in their absence and drawing their salaries
Hyderabad: Exploiting the criminal potential of biometric systems to the hilt and managing to hoodwink authorities for eight years, two contract Sanitary Field Assistants of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation used fake fingerprints to draw salaries of five persons, Rs.14,000 a month, for eight years.
The South Zone Task Force and the Bhavani Nagar police finally nabbed the two on charges of preparing duplicate thumb impressions of sweepers and using them in their absence and drawing their salaries. Officials seized five duplicate fingerprints, two biometric devices and two mobile phones from Mohd. Haji Ahmed alias Ali (38), from Talabkatta in Bhavani Nagar and Mohd.Layeeq (42), from Moghalpura.
According to the police, the two, contract employees with the GHMC for nearly 15 years, used to supervise employees by taking attendance through biometric thumb fingerprints.
“Subsequently, they created counterfeit thumb impressions and engaged five relatives as workers. But these five workers never attended work since enrolment,” a Task Force official said, adding that their attendance was being marked in the mobile biometric device using the duplicate fingerprints and their salaries claimed by the suspects for the last eight years. Each person was earning about Rs.14,000, the official said.
Following a tip-off, the police caught the duo near Meraj Hotel in Bhavani Nagar and seized the counterfeit fingerprints and other material from them. They were handed over to the Bhavani Nagar police for taking further action.
