Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Cybercrime police on Wednesday arrested a woman on charges of cheating a software engineer based in the United States in the guise of marrying him. She lured him on a popular matrimonial site, trapped and collected lakhs from him, police said.
The arrested person, K Archana (30), a resident of Leela Nagar in Begumpet and native of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, had registered herself under the name Pushtayi on a matrimonial site. According to the Cybercrime police, the software engineer’s family came across her profile and contacted her.
“Since then, she started calling the techie and built an emotional bond. After building confidence, she started asking for costly clothes and jewellery for the engagement. When he paid her Rs 1.5 lakh, she stopped responding to his calls and avoided him,” police said.
Archana, who is actually married to a lecturer, would post fake profiles in matrimonial sites with photos downloaded from Google seeking foreign alliances only, police said and added that when the bridegroom or his parents would start interacting on a foreign mobile number, she would speak to them in different voices using mobile applications.
After interacting with them for a few days, she would make them believe that she was in India on a short visit from the US, before collecting money and cutting contact. Archana, was earlier arrested and jailed for similar offences, was produced before court and remanded in judicial custody.
