Hyderabad: In a gruesome incident, a woman killed her one-year-old daughter and later attempted suicide at her house at HMT Society in Shapurnagar in the wee hours of Tuesday. A family dispute is suspected to have led to the incident, police said.
Susheela (28) was married to Narayana Reddy two years ago and the couple has a one-year-old daughter, Deeksha. The couple, both natives of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh moved to Hyderabad three months ago. While Narayana Reddy works in a fabrication workshop, Susheela was a housewife.
According to Jeedimetla police, Narayana Reddy suspected Susheela’s fidelity and was allegedly harassing her for sometime. On Monday night, the couple had a fight. Around 3 am on Tuesday, Susheela took Deeksha into the bathroom, outside their single room house and first slit the baby’s throat with a knife and later attempted suicide by slitting her throat as well.
“She had shut the bathroom door and attempted suicide. Narayana and his neighbours heard the baby crying and rushed to their rescue. They forcibly opened the door and immediately shifted them to the hospital,” police said, adding while Deeksha was declared dead, Susheela is being treated.
A case of murder and dowry harassment was booked and is being investigated. No arrests have been made yet in connection with the case, officials said.
The body was shifted to the Gandhi Hospital morgue and preserved for an autopsy.
