Jogulamba Gadwal: A young woman was strangled allegedly by her parents in Kalukuntla village of Manopad mandal after she refused to undergo an abortion, police said. The parents have been remanded in judicial custody.
Police said the woman was pursuing a degree course in Kurnool, where she was in a relationship with a person from a different caste. Due to the lockdown, she had returned to her village where her pregnancy was confirmed. Despite her parents’ efforts to convince her to get aborted, she refused to budge.
According to J Venkateshwarlu, Shanti Nagar CI, her parents had feared that she would elope, so every night they used to lock her up inside a room and the rest of the family members used to sleep outside. On Saturday, Bhaskaraiah and his wife opened the door and strangled her to death using bed sheets and a pillow. They tried to make it look like she had some health problem and tried to take her to a nearby hospital.
The panchayat secretary of the village who grew suspicious complained to Shanti Nagar police, who took the body for post-mortem on Sunday. It was found that she had died due to forced death. On Monday, upon interrogation, her parents confessed to the murder. A case of murder was booked against them.
