Hyderabad: Apparently driven by poverty, a mother of two allegedly sold her newborn son for Rs 50,000 to a childless woman at Gandhi Hospital here, officials said on Monday.
Jyothi (35), a resident of Brahman Wadi, Begumpet gave birth to a baby boy in gynaecology ward of the hospital three days ago. After being separated from her husband, Jyothi has been earning her livelihood by begging. It has also been reported that Jyothi was lured by an unknown person to sell the baby for Rs 50,000 to a childless woman for which she had agreed.
The incident came to light while Jyothi was bargaining near the family planning section of the hospital with Rizwana who had come from Nizamabad to buy the baby. Both were caught by the security guards who informed Chilkalguda police about the incident.
“We have requested the child rights officials to intervene and shift the infant to Shishuvihar, accommodate the poor mother in a government hostel and initiate action against the middle man,” said Anuradha Rao, president, Balala Hakkula Sangham in a press release. The Chilkalguda police registered a case against the woman and shifted the newborn to Shishu Vihar.
