The Supreme Court ruled that banks and the Indian Banks’ Association cannot place advocates on caution lists solely over allegations of professional negligence. It said disciplinary action against lawyers falls exclusively within the jurisdiction of the Bar Councils under the Advocates Act
The petition alleged that senior designation has created a class of advocates with special rights and "the same has been seen as reserved only for the kith and kin of judges and senior advocates, politicians, ministers etc."
