Amid reports of the bird flu outbreaks, a series of measures have been initiated by the states in the last few days that included large scale culling of the birds, checks at borders to stop the entry of poultry and issuing advisories on safe consumption of eggs and chicken.
In the past 15 days, thousands of chickens in poultry farms in Sathupalli, Penuballi, Bhadrachalam and Kallur mandals and areas on Telangana-Andhra Pradesh borders died after getting infected by Ranikhet disease
Avian influenza has been confirmed in two areas of East and West Godavari districts in Andhra Pradesh. However, boiled egg or chicken can be consumed as they are cooked at high temperature and as such the virus cannot survive
On May 20, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) jointly issued an advisory on H5N1 for all states.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Wednesday that a second case of H5N1 in dairy cows has been identified in Michigan, part of an ongoing multistate outbreak, according to a report by Xinhua news agency.
"As many as 2,403 birds have died so far. We expect that this number will grow. We are on high alert and monitoring the situation very carefully," Pathania said.
