The highly transmissible variant has outpaced Delta, to become the dominant variant, accounting for nearly three-quarters of Covid cases in the country.

Dr Fauci said the world can help by supplying India with materials and perhaps even personnel that they need to adequately address it.

"Now, this is something we are still gaining data on, but most recent data looking at convalescent sera of Covid-19 cases in people who received Covaxin, it was found to neutralise the 617 variant," Fauci was quoted as saying during the White House press briefing

India on Saturday recorded 3,46,786 new COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day spike since the pandemic broke out last year.

He has previously expressed that he was concerned about the political blowback of removing the popular and respected doctor before Election Day.

"We had a super spreader event in the White House and it was in a situation where people were crowded together, were not wearing masks."
