The Supreme Court has set aside 27 ex parte orders declaring individuals as foreigners in Assam. Remanding cases for fresh adjudication, the court ruled that citizenship determinations cannot be mechanical and must satisfy constitutional requirements of fairness
The Supreme Court ordered status quo on the deportation of five women declared foreigners by Assam tribunals and agreed to hear their appeals. The court directed that detainees not be deported until the next hearing while seeking responses from authorities
The final NRC was released on August 31, 2019 by excluding names of 19,06,657 persons. A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants.
