Gold prices surged over 9 per cent this month, outperforming broader equity markets, while investors shifted gains toward safer assets. Gold prices fell for a third consecutive week, pressured by a stronger dollar and fading hopes of a US Fed rate cut. Global economic uncertainty, eased US–China trade tensions, and changes in China’s gold retail policies also impacted bullion demand.

Apart from reducing the import duty on gold, the government also proposed to authorise the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) as regulator for domestic gold spot exchanges.
