Hathras gang-rape case
Unnao district in Uttar Pradesh has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent years.
Kappan was arrested on October 5, 2020 while he was on his way to Hathras, home to the 19-year-old Dalit woman who died after being allegedly gang-raped by four upper-caste men on September 14.
A 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four upper-caste men in Hathras on September 14. She died on September 29 at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital during treatment.
The Congress leader said that according to the family, the Hathras DM meted out the worst treatment to them, and asked who was protecting the officer.
Talking to local reporters in Balliya, the BJP MLA said neither governance nor use of weapons can prevent such crimes.
The Union Minister further said, "Rahul Gandhi has always strived to do politics, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been successful in the realm of national policies".
Calling for a people's movement to break "this mindset" of violence, Satyarthi said “we need both compassionate political will and people's action” to bring an end to the culture of rape.
According to party spokesperson Anshu Awasthi, police personnel have been stationed outside Lallu's house here and he is not being allowed to venture outside.
Joint Magistrate Prem Prakash Meena refuted allegations that the administration had confined the victim's family and confiscated their phones.
On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi along with several party leaders were detained by the police and sent back to Delhi, after they tried to reach Hathras to meet the family of the Dalit woman.
Rahul Gandhi was manhandled, stopped and even arrested by UP Police while he was on his way to Hathras to meet the family of the gangrape victim along with party's general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and other Congress leaders.
A case has been registered against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and over 200 others, according to the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police.
