The apex court granted him liberty to approach appropriate forum challenging his arrest or any other relief and disposed of the plea filed by Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ).

A 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly raped by four upper-caste men in Hathras on September 14. She died on September 29 at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital during treatment.

The SIT was set up on September 30 and initially given seven days to probe the Hathras case, but given 10-day extension on its request.

Calling for a people's movement to break "this mindset" of violence, Satyarthi said “we need both compassionate political will and people's action” to bring an end to the culture of rape.

The family has expressed suspicion that she was killed after sexual assault. However, rape can only be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
