The Centre has directed states to impose a complete ban on new mining leases in the Aravallis and tasked the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) with preparing a comprehensive sustainable mining plan. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised the government’s clarifications, alleging they could open the door to widespread mining and cause irreversible environmental damage.
