Indonesian rescuers launched a search operation after passenger ship Virgo Transport 8, carrying 240 people, lost contact while traveling from Surabaya to South Kalimantan. The vessel was last located in the Java Sea, about 148 kilometres from Banjarmasin
Five people were killed and 41 remained missing after the Mutiara Santosa 2 caught fire in the Java Sea off Indonesia's East Java province. Rescue teams evacuated 225 people, while search operations continued to locate the missing passengers and crew.
"Boeing technical experts are assisting with the investigation and we continue to offer any support needed during this difficult time," the company said in a statement on Sunday.
Retrieving the boxes cockpit voice and flight data recorders will likely help explain why the Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500 plunged about 10,000 feet (3,000 metres) in less than a minute before slamming into the Java Sea.
