England, who lost two wickets off successive balls immediately after tea to Mohammed Siraj (2/34), were reduced to 23 for two before Root and opener Rory Burns (49) added 85 for the third wicket to stabilise the innings

India were 52 for one chasing a target of 209 but Root felt that England still had a chance as the pitch was offering assistance to fast bowlers.

"We are coming into a period of time now where rest and rotation is put behind us," Root was quoted as saying by 'ESPNcricinfo'.

England had chosen to bat after winning the toss, with Root hoping that they could put as many runs on the board before the pitch would start assisting spin.

The off spinner puts India on brink of a massive series-levelling victory against England

England lead the four match series 1-0 after defeating India by a massive 227 runs in the first Test.

England made a big statement with a more clinical show that that caught the Indians napping. Naturally, all eyes were on Virat Kohli’s men when the series began against the disciplined Joe Root’s team.

Kohli was dismissed cheaply for 11 runs when he edged off-spinner Dom Bess to short leg.
